Deadly Multi-Vehicle Crash Closes I-75 in Cobb County

A deadly crash involving more than a dozen vehicles and several tractor trailers forced I-75 to close in both directions in Cobb County on Thursday, February 11, 2021.

The fiery crash happened on Interstate-75 northbound at milemarker-270 near Barrett Parkway and the Chastain Road exit just before 11:30 Thursday morning. At least one person died in the crash. First responders extricated at least one person from their vehicle. Images show several vehicles engulfed in flames. Police have not confirmed additional fatalities or injuries stemming from the multi-vehicle pile-up.

Video footage of the accident shows at least three tractor trailers and several commercial vehicles with significant damage. Dozens of passenger vehicles including a Volkswagen, Nissan Altima and a Mercedes Benz can also be seen in photos of the mangled wreckage.  More than 40 first responders were at the scene. Chris Hill, a truck driver, witnessed the tragic accident and told Atlanta news outlet, WSB that a commercial van traveling northbound caught on fire. Witnesses say the flames quickly spread to a truck and an 18-wheeler.

Cobb County police say I-75 will remain closed for several more hours. Authorities diverted traffic to I-575. Cobb County official also urged motorists to use highway alternate routes, including Highway 41 into Kennesaw.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the this deadly multi-vehicle crash in Cobb County. The crash remains under investigation.
